In 1864 Chief Little Shell did what only Buffalo do. He took his people and marched right into the Montana Winter Blizzard. After he refused the falsified treaties, to take what the Government was offering for their land in North Dakota.
The Little Shell tribe took the hard route, by battling the government for hundreds of years for Tribal Sovereignty to finally achieve it in 2019.
As we reflect on this, the Buffalo has become symbolic for all Little Shell people. The way of life and survival. It has been said that the Buffalo Voices are the voices of our Elders, the ones who told us to be resilient and to never give up no matter how big the storm. The 574 Buffalo symbolizes all the hardship and accomplishments experienced by Little Shell Tribe.
